The treatment that transforms worn smiles in one visit
Edge bonding is one of my favourite treatments to provide. Patients walk in with teeth that look shorter, worn down, or uneven, and walk out with a noticeably restored smile, almost always in under two hours, with no drilling and no anaesthetic. It remains underutilised partly because it requires significant artistic skill to do well, and partly because patients have simply never heard of it.
What edge bonding actually is
Edge bonding is a targeted application of composite resin to the incisal edges of the front teeth, the biting edges of the upper and sometimes lower incisors and canines. It is a specific variant of composite bonding focused on restoring tooth length and correcting uneven or eroded edges.
It is not the same as full composite bonding, which addresses the entire visible surface of a tooth. Edge bonding is precise and targeted, adding material only to the edge where it has been lost.
Who is it for
The patients I see most often for edge bonding have one of four situations. Worn front teeth from grinding is the most common. Years of bruxism gradually wears the incisal edges, making the front teeth shorter and flatter. The smile looks older than it should and the natural curve of the teeth is lost. Second is acid erosion from gastric reflux, frequent vomiting, or high-acid diets. Third is naturally uneven tooth lengths, one tooth sitting slightly shorter than its neighbour, which edge bonding corrects quickly. Fourth is small chips from trauma or biting something hard.
The procedure
The tooth edges are cleaned and lightly etched with acid gel. A bonding agent is applied and light-cured. Composite resin is then built up in layers to the desired edge length. The shape and contour of the new edges are sculpted freehand. This is where the artistic element matters and where it separates a good result from a great one. The edges are then polished to match the lustre of the natural tooth surface.
Most patients have no pain during the appointment. For the upper four to six front teeth, the appointment takes 60 to 120 minutes.
How long does it last
With appropriate care, edge bonding on upper front teeth typically lasts five to eight years. Longevity depends heavily on three things. First, whether the underlying cause has been addressed. If a patient grinds their teeth and we bond without providing a night guard, the composite will wear again relatively quickly. A night guard is non-negotiable for grinding patients after edge bonding. Second, dietary habits. Biting hard foods, bones, ice, crusty bread, all shorten the lifespan of bonding significantly. Third, oral hygiene. Consistent brushing and avoiding heavy staining foods extends the time before the bonding needs polishing or replacement.
Edge bonding versus full composite bonding versus veneers
Edge bonding addresses only the edge. If a patient also has significant discolouration, surface pitting, or shape concerns across the whole tooth face, full composite bonding or porcelain veneers may be more appropriate. I discuss all three options at your cosmetic consultation.
For patients whose primary concern is tooth length and edge symmetry, edge bonding is almost always the most conservative and cost-effective starting point.
