Many implants last 15 years or more. How long yours lasts depends on your gum health, cleaning at home and regular check-ups.

How long does the whole process take?

Usually three to six months from placement to the final crown. In many cases we can fit a temporary crown on the day.

How an implant works

A small titanium post is placed in the jaw where the tooth used to be. Over a few months the bone grows around it. A crown is then fitted on top, and it works much like a natural tooth when you eat and speak.

We plan each implant from a CBCT 3D X-ray and place it using a surgical guide made from that plan. Planning this way helps us place the implant where the bone is best and keeps the surgery shorter.

Matched to your teeth

The crown is made to match the shade and shape of the teeth beside it.

Fixed in place

Unlike a denture, it stays in. With good care and regular check-ups, implants can last many years.

Helps keep the bone

The jawbone shrinks where a tooth is missing. An implant puts load back through the bone, which helps slow that loss.

Guided placement

A CBCT scan and a printed surgical guide let us place the implant exactly where it was planned.

Options

From one tooth to a full arch

Implants can replace a single tooth, a few teeth or a whole arch. The right option depends on how many teeth are missing and the bone that is left.

Single implant

Replaces one missing tooth with an implant and a crown. The teeth either side are left as they are.

Implant bridge

Two implants can support a bridge of three or four teeth, so you do not need an implant for every tooth.

Implant-retained denture

Two to four implants hold a denture firmly in place, so it does not move when you eat or speak.

Full arch on implants

A fixed set of teeth on four to six implants, for people missing most or all of their teeth in one jaw. About full-arch implants

Suitability

Is an implant right for you?

Most adults who are missing a tooth can have an implant. What matters most is having enough healthy bone to hold it, healthy gums, and general health that lets a small surgical procedure heal well.

Some things need a closer look first. Smoking, diabetes that is not well controlled, gum disease and some medicines for bone conditions can all affect healing. None of these automatically rule an implant out, but we talk them through with you and may suggest a different plan.

If an implant is not the best fit, we explain the other options, such as a bridge or a denture, and what each one involves. You decide what suits you.

Not everyone needs extra work, but some people do. If a tooth needs to come out first, or there is not enough bone, extractions, bone grafting and sinus lifts are quoted separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

How much do dental implants cost?

Am I a suitable candidate?

Most adults with enough healthy bone can have an implant. We check this with a CBCT scan at your consult.

Is the procedure painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Many people find it easier than having a tooth out. IV sedation is available if you are nervous.

What happens at each stage

Consult and 3D scan

We look at your mouth, take a CBCT 3D scan and talk about what you want. This visit is free.

Your plan and quote

We plan where the implant will sit on the scan and give you a written quote, including any grafting you might need.

Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, using a guide made from your plan. IV sedation is available.

Healing

The bone grows around the implant over roughly three to four months. A temporary tooth can often be worn in the meantime.

Fitting your crown

We scan the implant and fit a crown made to match the teeth beside it, then check your bite.

Review

We check the implant and gums again a few weeks later, then at your regular check-ups.

Aftercare

Looking after your implant

For the first few days some swelling and tenderness is normal. Stick to soft food, keep your toothbrush off the area for a day or two and take pain relief as advised. We give you written aftercare instructions to take home and check in with you after the surgery.

Clean it like a natural tooth

Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth with floss or small interdental brushes.

Keep up your check-ups

Regular check-ups and cleans let us pick up gum problems around the implant early.

Protect it from grinding

If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard helps protect the implant and crown.

Avoid smoking

Smoking slows healing and raises the risk of infection around implants. It helps to stop before and after treatment.
