Room to breathe, room for teeth

A narrow upper jaw can crowd teeth and narrow the airway. Expansion gently widens the jaw to make space, while airway focused care looks at how breathing, sleep and jaw growth connect.

Common questions

Is this only for children?

No. Early treatment can guide growth in children, and adults can benefit from expansion and airway focused care too.

Does expansion hurt?

Most people feel light pressure for a short time, not pain.

How long does it take?

It varies with each person. We will give you a clear timeframe at your assessment.

What age is best for an assessment?

We assess children from age six. The upper jaw is still growing at that age, which can make expansion simpler. Adults can be assessed too, and the options are different once growth has finished.

Will my child need braces as well?

Some children do and some do not. Expansion makes room for the adult teeth to come through, and we review whether braces or aligners are needed once more of those teeth are in.

Can expansion treat sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is diagnosed by a doctor with a sleep study. If we notice signs such as snoring or mouth breathing, we may suggest you talk to your GP. Widening the upper jaw may help some people breathe through the nose more easily, but it is not a treatment for sleep apnoea on its own.
