Everything you need to know before choosing sedation dentistry
If the thought of going to the dentist causes genuine distress rather than mild nervousness, if it has kept you from getting dental care for years, IV sedation may be the option that finally removes that barrier. I hold ADA 6.17 certification and we have a purpose-built sedation suite at Lumi Dental. Here is what the process actually involves.
What IV sedation actually is
IV sedation involves a sedative drug being administered through a small cannula inserted into a vein in your arm or hand. The most commonly used agents in Australian dental sedation are midazolam (a benzodiazepine) and sometimes propofol. The result is a deeply relaxed, drowsy state where you remain able to breathe independently and respond to verbal instructions, but are essentially unaware of the procedure and have little or no memory of it afterwards.
Safety standards in Australia
IV sedation in a dental practice is regulated under ANZCA Professional Document PG09(G) and ADA Guideline 6.17. Compliance requires a qualified anaesthetist present, full resuscitation equipment, continuous monitoring, a dedicated recovery area, and a pre-sedation medical assessment protocol. At Lumi Dental, IV sedation is administered by a qualified anaesthetist.
Who is suitable
IV sedation is appropriate for patients with significant dental anxiety, patients who want to complete large amounts of dental work in as few visits as possible, patients with a strong gag reflex, and patients with complex medical histories. Most healthy adults are suitable. A pre-sedation medical assessment identifies any contraindications.
What to expect on the day
Fast for at least six hours for solids and two hours for clear fluids before your appointment. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. Most patients have no memory of the procedure and are alert enough to leave within 30 to 60 minutes. Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours.
Cost at Lumi Dental
IV sedation typically costs $500 to $900 for the sedation component, in addition to the dental treatment fees. Most health funds with major dental extras provide a partial rebate. A written quote covering both sedation and treatment is provided at your free pre-sedation consultation.
