Does Gum Tissue Grow Back? What Recession Can and Cannot Reverse

Gum tissue that has been lost to recession does not grow back on its own. Once the gum has pulled away from a tooth and the attachment beneath it is gone, no toothpaste, mouthwash or rinse will rebuild it. The one rule worth knowing is this: you cannot regrow receded gum, but you can usually stop it getting worse, and a graft can physically cover an exposed root. This guide explains why gums do not regenerate, what you can still do, and when to see a dentist.

Key takeaways

  • Receded gum tissue does not grow back naturally.
  • Recession is loss of attachment and often bone, not just missing gum.
  • No product sold anywhere can regrow gum, despite marketing claims.
  • You can usually halt or slow recession by removing its cause.
  • A gum graft is the main way to cover an exposed root surface.

Why gums do not grow back

Gum recession is not simply a case of missing tissue. The gum is anchored to the tooth and to the bone underneath by connective fibres, and in most recession the bone has receded too. The body does not spontaneously rebuild that fibre-and-bone architecture, so soft tissue does not creep back over a root that has lost its support. This is different from the quick healing you get after biting your cheek, where the underlying structure is intact. Our guide to gum recession causes and treatment goes into more detail.

What you can still do

The good news is that stopping recession in its tracks is very achievable in most cases, and that is the real goal. Recession is usually driven by a cause you can address: overly hard brushing, gum disease, grinding, or a build-up of plaque and tartar. Remove the cause and the recession usually stops progressing, even though the tissue already lost stays lost.

When a gum graft is an option

If a root is exposed and causing sensitivity, decay risk or appearance concerns, a gum graft is the main way to physically cover it. In a graft, a thin layer of tissue, often taken from the palate, is placed over the exposed area by a dentist or periodontist. It is a surgical procedure and is not needed for everyone, but it is the recognised way to restore coverage where recession has already happened. A dentist can advise whether it suits your situation.

Beware of products that promise regrowth

Toothpastes, gels, oils and supplements that claim to regrow gums cannot deliver on that promise, because the biology simply does not allow it. Some products can soothe sensitivity or improve gum health, which is worthwhile, but that is different from regrowing tissue. If sensitivity from an exposed root is the problem, our guide on the best toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help. And if your gums bleed, our article on bleeding gums when brushing covers the likely cause.

Frequently asked questions

Can receding gums grow back naturally?

No. Once gum tissue and its attachment are lost, they do not regenerate on their own. You can stop recession worsening, but the lost tissue stays lost.

Does any toothpaste regrow gums?

No toothpaste can regrow gum tissue. Some can help sensitivity or gum health, but none rebuilds lost tissue.

How do I stop my gums receding further?

Address the cause. That usually means a soft brush and gentle technique, cleaning between teeth, treating gum disease or grinding, and regular check-ups.

Is a gum graft the only way to cover an exposed root?

A graft is the main way to physically cover an exposed root. Whether it is needed depends on symptoms and your dentist's assessment. Our guide on swollen gums covers related gum concerns.

Is gum recession serious?

It can be, because it may signal gum disease and can expose roots to sensitivity and decay. Early assessment lets you stop it before it advances.

Worried about your gums?

If your gums are receding or sensitive, an early check-up lets you protect what you have. The team at Lumi Dental can help. See current new-patient options on our offers page or learn about our general dental care.
