Crowns and bridges

Strength and shape, restored

A crown covers and protects a tooth that has been weakened by a large filling, a crack or root canal treatment. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining a new tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. Both are fixed in place and cared for like your own teeth.

When a crown or bridge may help

1

Cracked or broken teeth

A crown holds a cracked tooth together and helps stop the crack from spreading.

2

Large or failing fillings

When a filling makes up most of the tooth, a crown is often the longer lasting option.

3

After root canal treatment

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are more likely to fracture. A crown protects them.

4

A missing tooth

A bridge fills the gap using the neighbouring teeth for support. We will also explain implants so you can compare.

How the process works

1

Assessment

We examine the tooth, take X-rays if needed and explain whether a crown, bridge, filling or implant suits you best.

2

Preparation and scan

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and a digital scan is taken, so in most cases there are no impression trays.

3

Temporary crown

You leave with a temporary crown that protects the tooth while your final crown is made.

4

Fitting

We check the fit, bite and shade of your crown or bridge before bonding it in place.

Common questions

How long does a crown last?

With good home care and regular check-ups, crowns commonly last many years. Grinding, gum health and decay around the edges all play a part.

What are crowns made from?

We mostly use zirconia and porcelain crowns, chosen for strength and appearance depending on where the tooth sits in your mouth.

Will my health fund cover it?

Crowns and bridges are major dental items, so your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. We can give you the item numbers to check before you start.

What to expect

Choosing the right option

A crown is not always the answer. If a tooth can be repaired well with a filling or an onlay, we will tell you.

For a missing tooth, a bridge and an implant are both good options. A bridge is usually quicker and avoids surgery but involves preparing the teeth either side. An implant stands on its own. We will explain both so you can decide.

Every crown and bridge is checked at your regular visits so any small issue can be picked up early.
