Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually between the late teens and mid twenties. Many cause no trouble. Others only partly come through, grow at an angle or are hard to clean, which can lead to pain, infection or decay in the tooth next door. We assess them properly and only recommend removal when there is a clear reason.

Signs your wisdom teeth may need attention

Pain or swelling at the back

Often caused by inflamed gum around a partly erupted tooth, known as pericoronitis.

Infections that keep returning

Food trapped around the tooth can cause flare-ups that come back again and again.

Decay or damage

A wisdom tooth that is hard to reach can decay, or damage the molar in front of it.

Planning other treatment

Removal is sometimes advised before orthodontic or other planned treatment.

How the process works

Assessment and imaging

We examine the area and take an OPG X-ray, adding a 3D scan when the roots sit close to the nerve.

Your options

We explain whether removal is needed, what is involved and the expected recovery, with a written quote.

Removal

The tooth is removed under local anaesthetic, with IV sedation available. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Recovery and review

You go home with written aftercare instructions and we check on your healing.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

The area is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal.

How long is recovery?

Most people are back to normal activities within a few days. Swelling usually peaks around day two or three, then settles.

Can I be sedated?

Yes. IV sedation is available for patients who feel anxious or are having more than one tooth removed.

What to expect

Before and after your appointment

If you are having IV sedation, we will give you fasting instructions and you will need someone to take you home.

Plan a quiet day or two afterwards. Stick to soft foods, avoid smoking and vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours, and follow your aftercare sheet.

If pain or swelling gets worse after a few days, call us and we will see you.
