THE SHORT ANSWER

Where to get your teeth whitened in Sydney

Professional whitening is done by registered dental practitioners, because only they can use or supply the stronger gels that make a real difference.

At Lumi Dental, a dentist or oral health therapist checks your teeth and gums first. You then whiten with custom trays at home, or start in the chair and finish at home.

Most people pay $449 to $749 here, depending on the option.

YOUR OPTIONS

Three ways to whiten

Lumi Home

Custom trays made from a scan of your teeth, with professional gel to use at home, usually over one to two weeks.

Gentler

Lumi Refresh

A gentle in-chair session to start the lift, then take-home whitening to finish it. A good choice if whitening has made your teeth sensitive before.

Before an event

Lumi Radiance

A longer in-chair session for the biggest lift we do in one visit, then take-home whitening to finish it.

In-chair whitening on its own does not get most people all the way. The take-home trays finish the result and let you top it up later, which is why every option includes them.

HOW IT WORKS

How whitening works here

1

Check

We look at your teeth, gums and any fillings or crowns at the front. Decay or gum problems need treating before whitening.

2

Start

We scan your teeth for your trays. If you chose Refresh or Radiance, your in-chair session is usually the same visit.

3

Finish at home

You wear the trays for a set time each day over one to two weeks. A top-up now and then keeps the colour.

2 to 3

years, usually

How long whitening lasts

Usually

Two to three years before you may want to whiten again.

Sooner if

You drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, or you smoke.

Top-ups

Keep your trays. A few nights with top-up gel is often enough.

Results

Vary from person to person. We cannot promise a particular shade.

Questions we are often asked

How much does teeth whitening cost in Sydney?

At Lumi Dental it is $449 for take-home whitening with custom trays, $549 for Refresh and $749 for Radiance, and every option includes take-home whitening. Prices at other practices vary, so ask whether custom trays and a check of your teeth are included.

Is professional whitening safe?

It is generally safe when your teeth and gums are checked first and the gel is used as directed. The most common side effect is sensitivity for a day or two, which usually settles. The Dental Board of Australia restricts stronger whitening products to registered dental practitioners.

How long does whitening last?

Usually two to three years before you may want to whiten again, depending on what you eat and drink. Top-ups with your trays help it last.

Will whitening change my fillings, crowns or veneers?

No. Only natural tooth enamel lightens. If you have work at the front, we plan around it. Sometimes it is worth replacing an old filling after whitening so it matches.

Do I need a check-up first?

Yes. We only whiten once we have checked your teeth and gums. If you have not had a check-up recently, we will suggest one first.
