Denistone and Melrose Park share a postcode, 2114, which surprises many people who live there. Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central, down the slope from Denistone towards the Parramatta River, and from Eastwood it is one suburb further. Outside peak hour it is usually a short drive from either suburb.

Search for a dentist in this area and most results cluster around Eastwood station, where the shops are. This guide looks a little further south. It covers the roads and train line that connect the suburbs, what to expect at your first appointment, children's dental benefits, and how evening, weekend and urgent appointments work.

One postcode, three very different centres

Denistone is a mostly residential suburb in the City of Ryde, about 16 kilometres north-west of the CBD. It has no real shopping strip; the railway station is effectively its centre, with the bushland of Darvall Park beside the line. Denistone East and Denistone West are separate suburbs alongside it.

Eastwood, one station north, is a much larger centre, about 17 kilometres from the city and split between the City of Ryde and the City of Parramatta. Its shops spread between Rowe Street and Rutledge Street on both sides of the railway, and it is known as the place where the Granny Smith apple was first grown. Eastwood has its own postcode, 2122.

Melrose Park is smaller and quieter than either, a riverside suburb bordered by West Ryde, Meadowbank and Ermington. Lumi Dental is in Melrose Central, its shopping centre. Our guide for Meadowbank and West Ryde covers the neighbours closer to the water.

The train line links all of them

Eastwood, Denistone and West Ryde are next to each other on the T9 Northern Line, so from either station West Ryde is only one or two stops away. At West Ryde, bus route 524 leaves from the interchange beside the station and runs through Melrose Park on its way to Parramatta.

Meadowbank, the stop after West Ryde, is the closest station to Melrose Central. From there it is a longer walk, or a short taxi or rideshare. Several local buses also stop at the small interchange outside Eastwood station, and the Transport for NSW trip planner will show the best connection on the day.

By car it is mostly downhill

From Eastwood, head south through Denistone to West Ryde and Victoria Road, then continue towards the river into Melrose Park. From Denistone you simply skip the first part. Victoria Road is the main thing that slows the trip, especially in the late afternoon, so allow extra time around school pick-up and commuter hours.

Parking at Melrose Central is free and undercover, which takes the pressure off if an appointment runs a little long.

Six things worth asking any practice

If you have recently moved into the area, or simply have not seen a dentist in a while, a few questions help you compare practices, ours included:

  • Is the examination and diagnosis done by a dentist?
  • Can X-rays and scans be taken on site, so you are not sent elsewhere?
  • Will you receive a written treatment plan before anything beyond the examination?
  • Are eligible children seen under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
  • How are urgent problems fitted in?
  • Are complex cases referred to a registered specialist when needed?

At Lumi, a dentist examines and diagnoses, and our oral health therapists look after cleans and gum care. We take 3D X-rays and intraoral scans in the practice, eligible children are bulk billed under the CDBS, and we refer to registered specialists where a case calls for one.

Your first appointment

We start by asking what brought you in, along with your medical history and any medicines you take. The dentist then examines your teeth, gums and soft tissues and decides whether X-rays are needed. You will usually receive a written treatment plan afterwards, often by email, if any treatment is recommended. Our page on an adult's first dental visit describes the appointment step by step.

Bring a list of your medicines and allergies, your health fund card and any recent X-rays from another practice. Claims are processed on the spot through HICAPS, which our article on claiming your health fund at the dentist explains.

Bringing the children

Many families in these suburbs are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule and do not know it. Services Australia lists three conditions: the child is eligible for Medicare, is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day in the calendar year, and the child or their parent, carer or guardian receives an eligible payment at least once in that year. There is nothing to apply for, as Services Australia writes to eligible families.

The scheme does not cover orthodontics or cosmetic treatment. Our oral health therapists Sabrina Tran and Jennifer Nguyen see children and families, and our children's dentistry page explains how a child's visit runs. For the detail of what the scheme pays for, read our CDBS explainer.

When something goes wrong

A cracked tooth, a lost filling, swelling or a toothache that keeps you up at night should be looked at promptly. Ring us first and describe the problem so the team can find a suitable time. If swelling is affecting breathing or swallowing, go straight to a hospital emergency department. Our guide on what to do in a dental emergency covers first aid while you wait.

We are open Monday to Saturday, until 9pm on Thursdays, and on Sundays by appointment. Saturdays and Thursday evenings fill quickly, so it helps to book ahead; our article on Saturday dental appointments has more on weekend visits.

What locals ask

Which station is best if I do not drive?

West Ryde, if you want to take the 524 bus the rest of the way, or Meadowbank if you are happy to walk the rest of the way. Both are only a few stops from Eastwood or Denistone.

Do you offer free consultations?

Yes, for cosmetic, implant, braces and clear aligner treatment, and for nervous patients. See our current offers for details.

Can I bring records from my old dentist?

Yes. With your permission we can request your notes and recent X-rays from your previous practice, which can save repeating images.
