If you live in Oatlands or North Parramatta and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a short drive down Kissing Point Road and Victoria Road, and most people allow around 10 to 15 minutes by car outside peak. Both suburbs sit in the City of Parramatta, 23 to 24 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD according to Wikipedia. A search for a dentist near Oatlands or North Parramatta mostly returns directory listings, so this guide covers the routes, the light rail, the first visit, children and the CDBS, Saturdays and emergencies.

Written by Dr James Tran, BDent (University of Sydney), MICOI, GradDip (Oral Implants), general dentist at Lumi Dental in Melrose Park.

The short version

  • Oatlands (around 5,800 residents, postcode 2117) and North Parramatta (around 12,000, postcode 2151) are neighbours in the City of Parramatta, according to Wikipedia; Melrose Park lies south-east of both, on the northern bank of the Parramatta River.
  • By car, Kissing Point Road runs east through Dundas, becomes Silverwater Road and meets Victoria Road at Ermington; Victoria Road then leads east to Wharf Road and Melrose Central. Allow around 10 to 15 minutes outside peak.
  • The Parramatta Light Rail runs from Westmead through Parramatta to Dundas, Telopea and Carlingford. Its second stage is planned to pass through Melrose Park but is not open, so a public transport trip ends with a bus along Victoria Road.
  • There is on-site parking at Melrose Central.
  • A first visit is an examination by a dentist, X-rays where needed, a clean and a written quote; our guide to what a dental check-up involves and costs walks through each step.
  • Eligible children can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and the practice keeps time for emergencies and opens on Saturdays.

The single rule: pick the dentist whose trip you can repeat every six to twelve months

The dentist who helps most is the one you keep seeing, and in my experience the deciding factor is whether the drive still feels easy at the fourth visit, on a school morning or a Saturday, with a child in the back seat. From Oatlands and North Parramatta that means a route that avoids the Parramatta CBD at peak and ends in a car park. Our guide to choosing a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park sets out the other questions worth asking.

Where the suburbs sit

Oatlands is the quieter of the two. Wikipedia describes it as extending from the south-east of Kissing Point Road and Vineyard Creek to the north-west, where it borders Pennant Hills Road and North Rocks. It takes its name from Oatlands House, one of the earliest homes in the Parramatta district, now a function centre with the Oatlands Golf Course around it; the area was once known as Dundas West. Oatlands Public School is on Belmore Street, near the small shopping area. Wikipedia records 5,833 residents at the most recent census and a median age of 42, with children under 15 and people over 65 each a little under a fifth of the population.

North Parramatta is larger and denser, with 12,064 residents across 5.2 square kilometres and most dwellings in flats or apartments, according to Wikipedia. Lake Parramatta, a 10-hectare reserve around a former reservoir, and The King's School together cover almost half the suburb, and the Cumberland Hospital precinct forms part of a conserved heritage core. The median age is 38, with 25 to 39 year olds the largest group, and about half of residents were born in Australia.

Melrose Park sits south-east of both, between Victoria Road and the river, and Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central there. Our companion guide to a dentist near Dundas and Telopea covers the suburbs in between.

Getting to Melrose Central

By car

From Oatlands, Kissing Point Road heads east through Dundas, where Wikipedia records it becomes Silverwater Road and crosses Victoria Road at an interchange in Ermington. Turn east onto Victoria Road there, and Wharf Road takes you down towards the river and Melrose Central. From North Parramatta, join Kissing Point Road from Pennant Hills Road, or take James Ruse Drive south to Victoria Road and follow it east through Rydalmere and Ermington. Most people allow around 10 to 15 minutes outside peak. These are planning estimates: Victoria Road slows at school and commuter times, and Transport for NSW runs westbound bus lanes through Ermington and Melrose Park in the weekday afternoon peak. On-site parking is at Melrose Central.

By light rail and bus

The Parramatta Light Rail connects Westmead to Carlingford through the Parramatta CBD, with 16 stops over 12 kilometres, according to the NSW Government. The Ngara, Benaud Oval and Fennell Street stops sit on the Church Street side of North Parramatta, and the line continues through Parramatta Square to Dundas and Telopea. None of its stops is in Melrose Park. The second stage is planned to reach Sydney Olympic Park via Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park and Wentworth Point, with stops at Murdoch Street, Atkins Road and Melrose Park, but it is not open. For now a public transport trip means the light rail or the local 609 bus into Parramatta, then one of the bus services Transport for NSW describes as frequent along Victoria Road. Check the trip planner.

What a first visit involves

At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, the hygiene team looks after the clean, and X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed. You leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. About half of North Parramatta residents were born overseas, according to Wikipedia, so many households here are choosing a dentist in Australia for the first time: bring a list of your medicines, your Medicare card and any health fund card. If you are nervous, say so when you book; it changes how I pace the first visit.

Children and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Families here are often eligible for the CDBS without realising it. Services Australia sets three conditions: the child is eligible for Medicare, is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, and the child or a parent, carer or guardian receives an eligible payment at least once that year. There is no application; Services Australia sends a letter when a child qualifies. The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the CDBS, and our explainer on the Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers what it pays for. Where a child needs general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.

Beyond the check-up: what families from these suburbs ask for

Most of the patients I see from Oatlands and North Parramatta come for a check-up and clean, but the same visit is where other questions surface. Teenagers and adults ask about clear aligners and teeth whitening; Lumi Dental's whitening options are named Home, Refresh and Radiance. Parents ask about custom sports mouthguards before the winter season. Older patients ask about dental implants, from a single tooth to a full arch, which the practice calls All-on-X, and about crowns, bridges and dentures. The practice is mercury-free and refers specialist cases to registered specialists. Lumi Dental does not provide general anaesthetic itself and refers where it is needed, though IV sedation is available at the practice for adults.

Emergencies, Saturdays and fitting a visit around work

A cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth or a swelling does not wait for a convenient day. Lumi Dental keeps time in the day for emergency appointments, so ring first and describe the problem; our post on how a dental practice triages emergency calls explains what the team will ask. The practice is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page. For anyone working in the Parramatta CBD, I usually suggest the first or last appointment of the day.
