From most balconies in Wentworth Point and Rhodes, the shoreline you can see across the Parramatta River is Melrose Park. Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central on that northern bank, and outside peak hour the drive usually takes somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on which bridge you use. The river makes the two sides feel further apart than they are.

This page sets out the practical side: which crossings work by car and which do not, the train and bus options, what happens at a first appointment, and how children's dental benefits, urgent problems and weekend visits fit in.
The nearest bridge is closed to cars
The Bennelong Bridge links Wentworth Point and Rhodes across Homebush Bay. Transport for NSW describes it as about 300 metres long, with two bus-only lanes and a path for walking and cycling, and states that it is not open to private vehicles, taxis or hire cars. So it will not shorten a drive to the dentist. What it does do is connect Wentworth Point to Rhodes station by bus or on foot, and buses including route 526 cross it.
Drivers therefore go around: to the west over Silverwater Bridge, or to the east over Ryde Bridge.
Driving routes from each peninsula
From the western peninsula
Head out via Hill Road or Bennelong Parkway to Silverwater Road, cross Silverwater Bridge and turn east onto Victoria Road. Melrose Central is a short distance along. Allow 10 to 20 minutes outside peak, and longer at commuter times, when both Silverwater Road and Victoria Road slow down. Treat these times as rough planning figures rather than promises.
From the eastern peninsula
From Rhodes, go north on Concord Road over Ryde Bridge, where the road continues as Church Street, then turn west onto Victoria Road. This is usually the quicker of the two routes, often 10 to 15 minutes in light traffic. Our guide for people in Ermington and Rydalmere describes the same stretch of Victoria Road from the western end.
Parking at Melrose Central is free and undercover, which helps for longer appointments.

Without a car, the train gets you most of the way
Rhodes station is on the T9 Northern Line, and the next stop north, Meadowbank, is on the far side of the river and the closest station to Melrose Park. From Meadowbank you can walk to Melrose Central in roughly half an hour, or take a short taxi or rideshare. If you are starting in Wentworth Point, a bus across the Bennelong Bridge to Rhodes station links you to the train.
People who prefer to walk or cycle the whole way can cross between Rhodes and Meadowbank on the shared path beside the railway. Check the Transport for NSW trip planner on the day, since bus routes and timetables change.
A future river crossing is planned, but not yet open
Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 is planned to run from Parramatta through Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park and Wentworth Point to Sydney Olympic Park. The NSW Government says the project includes a new public and active transport bridge over the river between Melrose Park and Wentworth Point, with bridge construction having started in 2025. No opening date has been announced, so plan today's visit around the existing bridges.

Your first appointment, step by step
A first visit begins with a conversation about why you have come in, your general health and any medicines you take. A dentist then examines your teeth, gums, tongue and the soft tissues of your mouth and checks for decay and gum problems. X-rays are taken only when they are needed, and we can take 3D X-rays and intraoral scans in the practice. Cleans and gum care are often done by one of our oral health therapists, either on the same day or at a separate visit.
Before any treatment begins, you will usually receive a written treatment plan, often by email, so you can look over the options at home. Our page on what to expect at an adult's first dental visit goes into more detail. It helps to bring:
- a list of your medicines and any allergies
- your health fund card, as claims are processed on the spot through HICAPS
- recent X-rays from another practice, if you have them
If dental visits make you anxious, mention it when you book or when you arrive. The team can slow things down, explain each step and build in breaks, and Lumi offers happy gas, inhaled pain relief, oral sedation and IV sedation.
Many families qualify for children's dental benefits without realising
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule helps eligible children receive basic dental care. Services Australia lists three conditions: the child is eligible for Medicare, is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, and the child or their parent or carer receives an eligible payment at least once in that year. There is nothing to apply for. Services Australia sends a letter to families whose child is eligible.
The benefit is capped at $1,158 per child over two calendar years and does not cover orthodontics or cosmetic treatment. At Lumi, eligible children are bulk billed under the scheme, and our oral health therapists Sabrina Tran and Jennifer Nguyen see children and families regularly. Our CDBS explainer sets out what the scheme pays for.

Urgent problems and weekend appointments
A broken tooth, a lost filling, swelling or a toothache that keeps you awake should be seen promptly. Ring the practice first and describe what is happening so the team can find the right time for you. If your face is swelling in a way that affects breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department. For problems outside opening hours, our guide to after-hours and public holiday dental emergencies explains the options.
Lumi is open Monday to Saturday, until 9pm on Thursdays, and on Sundays by appointment. Many people living on the peninsulas commute to the city, so Thursday evenings and Saturdays are popular and worth booking ahead. Our article on Saturday dental appointments has more on making weekend visits work.
About the practice
Lumi Dental is an independent general and cosmetic practice. The team includes general dentists and oral health therapists, and when a problem needs a registered specialist, we refer you to one. Alongside routine check-ups and cleans, we provide fillings, crowns, implants, braces and clear aligners. You can read more about our general dentistry or look through the neighbouring guide for Meadowbank and West Ryde.
Common questions
Can I drive over the Bennelong Bridge to get to an appointment?
No. Transport for NSW states the bridge is not open to private vehicles, taxis or hire cars. Use Silverwater Bridge from the western side or Ryde Bridge from the Rhodes side.
What is the easiest way over without a car?
Catch a T9 train from Rhodes one stop north to Meadowbank, then walk for about half an hour or take a short taxi ride to Melrose Central.
Does my child need to be enrolled before using the CDBS?
No. Eligibility is assessed by Services Australia, which writes to eligible families. Bring your child's Medicare card and our team can check the available balance before treatment.
