If you live in Ermington or Rydalmere, your nearest dentists are spread along the Victoria Road corridor and in the neighbouring riverside suburbs, and Lumi Dental sits at Melrose Central in Melrose Park, the suburb that borders Ermington to the east. All three suburbs lie on the northern bank of the Parramatta River, so a dentist in any one of them is local to the other two. Healthdirect recommends a dental check-up every 6 to 12 months, and the practice you choose should be one you can reach that often without fuss. This local guide to finding a dentist near Ermington and Rydalmere covers where the suburbs sit, what a first visit involves, how the Child Dental Benefits Schedule works, and what happens when you ring with a toothache.

The short version
- Ermington, Rydalmere and Melrose Park are neighbouring suburbs on the north side of the Parramatta River; Melrose Park borders Ermington, and Rydalmere sits on Ermington's western side.
- Pick the practice you will return to every 6 to 12 months. The Australian Dental Association notes that seeing the same dentist over time gives continuity of care that changing practices cannot match.
- A first visit is an examination, usually X-rays, a clean and a written plan with costs before treatment starts. Our guide on how to choose a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park lists the questions worth asking.
- Eligible children aged 0 to 17 can have basic dental care covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and Lumi Dental accepts it.
- Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page before travelling.
- A toothache, swelling or a knocked-out tooth should be phoned through the same day; practices triage these calls.
Where Ermington, Rydalmere and Melrose Park sit
The three suburbs run in a line along the river. Rydalmere is the westernmost, about 21 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD and bordered by Parramatta, with a commercial and light industrial side to the west and houses to the east. Ermington sits in the middle, a riverside suburb about 15 kilometres from the CBD, with shops along Betty Cuthbert Avenue and Victoria Road running through it. Melrose Park is the smallest and closest to the city, about 12 kilometres north-west of the CBD; it is split between the City of Ryde and the City of Parramatta and borders Ermington and West Ryde.
| Suburb | Council | Position | Transport noted on the suburb page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rydalmere | City of Parramatta | About 21 km west of the CBD, next to Parramatta | Ferry wharf on the Parramatta River; Victoria Road shops at Park Road |
| Ermington | City of Parramatta | About 15 km from the CBD, between Rydalmere and Melrose Park | Victoria Road and Silverwater Road; several bus routes |
| Melrose Park | City of Ryde and City of Parramatta | About 12 km north-west of the CBD, bordering Ermington and West Ryde | Bus route linking West Ryde and Parramatta; nearest train station Meadowbank |
Travel times depend on the hour and the route, so check a current map or Transport for NSW rather than any figure in minutes. Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central, the shopping centre in Melrose Park.

The rule: choose the practice you will actually go back to
Dental care works when it is regular. Healthdirect's advice is a check-up every 6 to 12 months, adjusted by your dentist to the state of your teeth and gums, and the Australian Dental Association points out that staying with one dentist gives you continuity of care, because that dentist knows your history. So the single most useful question is not "who is closest" but "which practice can I get to twice a year, at a time that suits, for years". The ADA suggests weighing hours outside nine to five, access by public transport or parking, whether the practice takes part in schemes like the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and whether it is accredited.
What a first visit involves
Healthdirect describes a check-up as an assessment of your dental and medical history, including medicines and allergies; an examination of the teeth, gums, lips, tongue and mouth; X-rays where needed to check for decay, infection, unerupted teeth or jaw bone changes; preventive care such as polishing and fluoride; and advice on brushing, flossing and diet. The clean may be done by the dentist or by an oral health therapist or hygienist, both registered dental practitioners. In my experience the first appointment runs longer than a routine recall because the history and baseline records take time. Our guide to a scale and clean and what to expect covers the cleaning part in detail.
What to bring
- A list of your medicines, including blood thinners, bisphosphonates and anything for diabetes or the heart.
- Your Medicare card for a child using the CDBS, and your health fund card if you have extras cover.
- Any recent X-rays or a note of your previous dentist so records can be requested.
- Your questions, written down, because they tend to vanish once you are lying back.
What to ask
The ADA's checklist for a first visit asks whether the practice gave you information about costs, appointments and treatments, whether options and risks were explained in a way you understood, and whether you agreed to all fees before treatment began. That agreement is what dentists call informed financial consent, and our article on informed financial consent and the written quote explains what it should contain.

Children: the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers part or all of the cost of basic dental services for eligible children. Services Australia lists three conditions: the child is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, is eligible for Medicare, and either receives a qualifying government payment or has a parent, carer or guardian who does, at least once in that year. Covered services include check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions, up to a capped amount over two consecutive calendar years that is indexed each year. Orthodontic work, cosmetic work and hospital dentistry are not covered. You do not apply; Services Australia writes to eligible families. The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the CDBS, and our guide to the CDBS walks through how the two-year period works. Families looking for a children's dentist in Melrose Park can bring the Medicare card and we check eligibility at the desk.
Toothache, swelling or a knocked-out tooth: how the call works
Healthdirect says to see a dentist if you have pain or bleeding in the mouth, a swollen face, or damage to a tooth. When you ring a practice with one of those, the receptionist is usually working through a short set of questions: how long, how bad, is there swelling, is there a fever, is a tooth loose or out. Those answers decide if you are seen within the hour, later that day or next morning, or sent to an emergency department instead (facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing goes to hospital, not a dentist). Our explainer on how a dental practice triages emergency calls sets out what each answer leads to. If a tooth has been knocked out, keep it moist in milk and ring on the way.
Saturdays, after work and Sundays
Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, and Sunday appointments can be arranged; hours change, so check the current ones on the contact page before you set off. Saturday mornings tend to book out first, so booking the next visit before you leave the previous one is the simplest way to keep a convenient slot.

How we approach this at Lumi Dental
Lumi Dental is a general and cosmetic dental practice at Melrose Central in Melrose Park, and most of the patients I see come from Ermington, Rydalmere, Ryde and Parramatta. The dentists carry out the examination and diagnosis, and the hygiene team of oral health therapists looks after cleans and gum therapy. The practice has in-house 3D intraoral scanning, 3D X-ray and 3D printing, is mercury-free, accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, offers IV sedation for people who find treatment hard to face, and keeps emergency appointments in the day. Specialist cases are referred to registered specialists. A written quote follows every examination, and you can read more about the general dentist service at Lumi Dental.
Questions patients ask
Is there a dentist near Ermington and Rydalmere?
Yes. Practices serve the area along Victoria Road and in the neighbouring suburbs, and Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central in Melrose Park, which borders Ermington. All three suburbs sit side by side on the northern bank of the Parramatta River.
How often should I see the dentist?
Healthdirect recommends a check-up every 6 to 12 months, even when nothing hurts. Your dentist adjusts the interval to your risk: people with gum disease, a dry mouth or a history of decay are usually seen more often, and people with stable mouths less often.
Does Lumi Dental accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
Yes, the whole practice accepts the CDBS for eligible children. Bring the child's Medicare card and eligibility is checked at the desk. Check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fissure seals, fillings and extractions are covered; orthodontics is not.
Is Lumi Dental open on Saturdays?
Yes. The practice is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment. Hours can change, so check the contact page for the current times. Our article on finding a Saturday dentist near Ryde and Parramatta explains how weekend appointments work.
What should I bring to a first dental appointment?
Your list of medicines, your Medicare card (for a child using the CDBS) and health fund card, any recent X-rays or your previous dentist's details, and your questions written down. If you are anxious about dentists, say so when you book; it changes how the visit is run.
