If you live, work or study in Homebush or Strathfield and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a short drive north across the Parramatta River on the Ryde Bridge, or a train ride on the Northern Line to West Ryde and a short bus trip, with on-site parking when you arrive. Homebush (postcode 2140) and Strathfield (postcode 2135) are both mainly in the Municipality of Strathfield, according to Wikipedia. This guide covers the routes, study and shift work, public dental eligibility, children, health funds and emergencies.
Written by Dr James Tran, BDent (University of Sydney), MICOI, GradDip (Oral Implants), general dentist at Lumi Dental in Melrose Park.
The short version
- Homebush had 11,660 residents at the most recent census, up from 7,007 at the one before, as apartments went up north of the railway. Strathfield had 25,915.
- By car, Homebush Bay Drive and Concord Road lead north to the Ryde Bridge, then Victoria Road runs west towards Melrose Park.
- Without a car, take a Northern Line train from Strathfield or North Strathfield to West Ryde, then bus route 524, which stops on Cobham Avenue in Melrose Park.
- Strathfield sits within Sydney Local Health District, which provides public dental care for eligible children and concession card holders.
- Our neighbouring guide to a dentist near Sydney Olympic Park and Newington covers the suburbs just north of Homebush.
- Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment, which can help around lectures and shifts.
The single rule: choose a trip you can repeat in a busy week
If you live in Homebush or Strathfield, pick a dentist whose trip still works in your busiest week, and book the next check-up before you leave each visit. In my experience, the check-ups that slip are the ones that felt like an expedition, and a small problem found at a routine visit is usually simpler to fix.
Where the suburbs sit
Homebush and Homebush West
Wikipedia places Homebush 12 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the Municipality of Strathfield. The railway, Parramatta Road and the M4 Motorway divide it into distinct parts. South of the railway is the older village, centred on Rochester Street and The Crescent near Homebush station. North of the railway, Parramatta Road has been rezoned for high density housing, with apartment blocks going up.
Homebush West, still widely called Flemington, lies to the west. It shares the 2140 postcode and is mainly in the Municipality of Strathfield, with a small unpopulated strip in Cumberland Council. The Sydney Markets, long known as the Flemington Markets, are here, and the village shops sit on The Crescent and Henley Road beside Flemington station. Lidcombe lies just to the west; our guide to a dentist near Silverwater and Lidcombe covers that side.
Strathfield
Strathfield is 13.8 kilometres west of the CBD and is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Strathfield. A small section north of the railway is in the City of Canada Bay, and the area east of The Boulevarde is in the Municipality of Burwood. The town centre sits on a square south of the station, known for its Korean restaurants and shops, and the Mount St Mary Campus of the Australian Catholic University is in the suburb.

Getting to Melrose Central
By car
From Homebush, Underwood Road links Parramatta Road with Homebush Bay Drive. Homebush Bay Drive runs north to Rhodes, where it becomes Concord Road and crosses the Parramatta River on the Ryde Bridge. North of the bridge the road becomes Church Street and meets Victoria Road at an interchange in Ryde. From there, follow Victoria Road west towards Melrose Park. From Strathfield, Concord Road runs north to join the same route just south of the bridge. There is on-site parking at Melrose Central.
By train and bus
Strathfield station is a major rail interchange. Northern Line trains run from Strathfield through North Strathfield, Concord West, Rhodes and Meadowbank to West Ryde, crossing the river between Rhodes and Meadowbank; some peak services skip stations, so check the trip planner. From Homebush or Flemington, change at Strathfield.
At West Ryde, the Transport for NSW timetable for route 524, Parramatta to West Ryde, shows buses from West Ryde Station to Cobham Avenue before Parer Street, Melrose Park, every day of the week. On the current timetable that leg takes about 5 minutes.
| Where you start | Usual way to Lumi Dental | Notes |

Students, early starts and shift work
Many people know Strathfield as a place they study or change trains. If your timetable or roster changes each term, a Saturday visit is often easier than fitting one between classes. Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page.
Irregular hours change eating patterns too. Snacking through a late study session or a long shift, and sipping sweetened drinks, gives plaque more time on the teeth. I usually suggest a toothbrush in your bag, water between meals, and fluoride toothpaste before you sleep, whatever time that is.
Public dental care and how private care fits
The Municipality of Strathfield is one of the council areas in Sydney Local Health District. Its Sydney Dental Hospital and Oral Health Services treat residents who are eligible for Medicare and are:
- children and young people under 18, or
- adults holding a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. A State Seniors Card on its own does not qualify.
The district lists community oral health clinics at Canterbury, Concord, Croydon and Marrickville as well as the dental hospital in Surry Hills, and interpreters are free for patients and families. Our guide to public dental in NSW and the waiting list covers how waiting lists work.

Health funds, first visits and children
Claiming on the spot
If you hold private extras cover, bring your health fund card so the claim can be processed at the desk. Our article on HICAPS and claiming your health fund at the dentist explains how it works.
Your first visit
A dentist does the examination and diagnosis, and X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed. You receive a written quote before any treatment starts. Bring your Medicare and health fund cards and a list of your medicines, and mention it when you book if you would like a family member with you to help with English.
Children and the CDBS
The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children; read more on the CDBS page or in our guide to the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Where a child needs a general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.

Emergencies
Sydney Local Health District lists swelling of the face, neck or mouth from a dental infection, bleeding from the mouth that will not stop, and difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing as emergency dental problems. If swelling makes breathing difficult, call Triple Zero (000). For a broken tooth or toothache, ring Lumi Dental first and describe what has happened; the practice keeps time for emergency appointments. Our guide on what to do in a dental emergency covers the first steps.
