If you live or work in Silverwater or Lidcombe and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a short drive north across the Parramatta River on the Silverwater Bridge, or a train and bus trip through Parramatta, with on-site parking when you arrive. Silverwater (postcode 2128) sits on the southern bank of the river in the City of Parramatta, and Lidcombe (postcode 2141) is mostly in Cumberland Council, according to Wikipedia. The short version
- Silverwater is mainly light industrial and commercial, with about 3,600 residents; Lidcombe has about 21,200 people and shops clustered around its station, according to Wikipedia.
- By car, Silverwater Road crosses the Silverwater Bridge into Ermington and meets Victoria Road, which runs east towards Melrose Park.
- Without a car, ride a train or bus to Parramatta and take bus route 524 towards West Ryde, which stops on Cobham Avenue in Melrose Park.
- Children under 18 who live in NSW, and adults with Medicare and an eligible concession card, can use public dental services; waiting times vary with demand.

- Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment, which helps if you work shifts.
The single rule: book around your roster, not around the pain
If you work shifts in Silverwater or commute through Lidcombe, pick a dentist whose trip and hours still work in your busiest week, and book the next check-up before you leave each visit. In my experience, people on changing rosters are the most likely to wait until a tooth hurts, and toothache rarely arrives on a day off.
Where the suburbs sit
Silverwater
Wikipedia places Silverwater 20 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD on the southern bank of the Parramatta River. Much of it became industrial land because of its road and river access, and it is now mainly a light industrial and commercial district. The M4 Western Motorway runs along its southern edge, with ramps to Silverwater Road. No trains run through Silverwater, so rail users make a short trip to Auburn station.
The most recent census counted about 3,600 residents, and 45.7% were born overseas.
Lidcombe
Lidcombe is 15 kilometres west of the CBD, mostly in Cumberland Council, with a small industrial area in the north in the City of Parramatta. Its station was once called Rookwood. Rookwood Cemetery and Necropolis, on East Street, is heritage-listed. The main shops cluster around the station, and commercial and industrial sites line Parramatta Road.
The most recent census counted 21,197 residents, and 30.6% were born in Australia. South Korea, China and Nepal were the next most common countries of birth.

Getting to Melrose Central
By car
From Silverwater, head north on Silverwater Road and cross the Silverwater Bridge over the Parramatta River. Wikipedia records that Silverwater Road was extended across the bridge to connect with Victoria Road at Ermington. From there, follow Victoria Road east towards Melrose Park. From Lidcombe, reach Parramatta Road or the M4 and turn north onto Silverwater Road. There is on-site parking at Melrose Central.
By train and bus
Lidcombe station is a junction served by several Sydney Trains lines, with T1 Western and T2 services running to Parramatta. From Silverwater, buses run to Parramatta and Auburn. At Parramatta, the Transport for NSW timetable for route 524, Parramatta to West Ryde, runs from Parramatta Station through the Yallamundi light rail stop in Rydalmere and Ermington to Cobham Avenue opposite Parer Street, Melrose Park, every day of the week. On the current timetable, that bus leg takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes.

Dental care around shift work and a working day in Silverwater
Many people know Silverwater as a place they work rather than live. If your shift starts early or finishes late, a day off or a Saturday is often easier than squeezing a visit between shifts. Lumi Dental is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page. Our guide to a Saturday dentist near Ryde and Parramatta has more on weekend appointments.
Shift work also changes eating patterns. Snacking through a night shift and sipping sweetened drinks to stay alert give plaque more time on the teeth. I usually suggest a toothbrush in your work bag, water between meals, and fluoride toothpaste before you sleep, whatever time that is.
If you work in a warehouse or play weekend sport, a blow to the mouth is always possible. Our guide on what to do in a dental emergency covers the first steps if a tooth is chipped or knocked out.
Public dental care and how private care fits
Western Sydney Local Health District provides public dental care for eligible residents in Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Holroyd and Parramatta, including through the Westmead Centre for Oral Health. Its eligibility rules are:
- All children under 18 who live in NSW.
- Adults who are eligible for Medicare and hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
- Some specialist or hospital-based care has extra requirements.
The district notes that waiting times vary with demand, that some services are free while others may have a cost explained first, and that an interpreter can be arranged if you ask. Our guide to public dental in NSW and the waiting list covers eligibility and waiting lists in more detail.

Health funds, first visits and children
Claiming on the spot
If you hold private extras cover, bring your health fund card so the claim can be processed at the desk. Our article on HICAPS and claiming your health fund at the dentist explains how claiming works.
Your first visit
At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, the hygiene team of oral health therapists looks after the clean, and X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed. You leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. Bring your Medicare and health fund cards and a list of your medicines. If you would like a family member with you to help with English, mention it when you book.
Children and the CDBS
The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children; read more on the CDBS page. Where a child needs general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.

Emergencies
Western Sydney Local Health District advises seeking urgent dental care for facial or mouth swelling, bleeding that will not stop, dental trauma, or difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing, and calling Triple Zero (000) or going to the nearest hospital emergency department if symptoms worsen. For a broken tooth or toothache, ring Lumi Dental first and describe what has happened; the practice keeps time for emergency appointments.
