If you live in Sydney Olympic Park or Newington and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is directly across the Parramatta River from you, and most people allow about 10 to 15 minutes by car outside peak via the Silverwater Bridge or the Ryde Bridge. The two suburbs sit side by side on the southern bank in the City of Parramatta, 13 to 16 kilometres west of the CBD according to Wikipedia. A search for a dentist near Sydney Olympic Park or Newington mostly returns directory listings, so this guide covers the routes across the river, the first visit, children, weekend sport, Saturdays and emergencies.

The short version
- Sydney Olympic Park (around 4,850 residents) and Newington (around 5,650) sit on the southern bank of the Parramatta River, according to Wikipedia, with Melrose Park directly opposite.
- No road bridge joins the two sides here, so by car you cross at the Silverwater Bridge or the Ryde Bridge and follow Victoria Road to Wharf Road; allow about 10 to 15 minutes outside peak.
- The F3 Parramatta River ferry links Sydney Olympic Park Wharf with Meadowbank, the suburb beside Melrose Park, in one stop. The T7 train only runs to Lidcombe.
- There is on-site parking at Melrose Central.
- A first visit is an examination by a dentist, X-rays where needed, a clean with the hygiene team and a written quote; our guide to an adult first dental visit walks through each step.
- Eligible children can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and the practice keeps time for emergencies and offers Saturday appointments.
The single rule: pick the dentist whose trip you can repeat on an event weekend
The dentist who helps most is the one you keep seeing every six to twelve months, and in my experience that comes down to whether the trip still works on a Saturday when the stadium precinct has a game on and its roads are closed. Our guide to choosing a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park sets out the questions worth asking first.
Where the suburbs sit
Sydney Olympic Park is the newer suburb. Wikipedia records that the land was once part of Lidcombe, was renamed Homebush Bay, and later became a suburb in its own right. Today it holds the stadiums, the Showground, more than 5,000 events a year and about 425 hectares of parkland. Wikipedia records 4,848 residents at the most recent census, with China and South Korea the most common countries of birth after Australia.
Newington is one kilometre to the north-west, between Silverwater Road and the river. It was the athletes' village for the Games, later converted to housing, and Wikipedia records 5,648 residents in 0.93 square kilometres. The Louise Sauvage Pathway and Blaxland Riverside Park run along the river between the two suburbs.
Melrose Park is the small suburb directly across the water, between Victoria Road and the northern bank, and Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central there. Our companion guide to a dentist near Wentworth Point and Rhodes covers the wharf end of Hill Road.

Getting to Melrose Central
By car
From Newington, head west to Silverwater Road, cross the Silverwater Bridge, turn east onto Victoria Road through Ermington, and Wharf Road takes you down towards the river and Melrose Central. From the Olympic Park town centre, Australia Avenue and Homebush Bay Drive lead north to Concord Road and the Ryde Bridge, then Victoria Road runs west to Wharf Road. Most people allow about 10 to 15 minutes outside peak. These are planning estimates: Victoria Road slows at school and commuter times, and precinct roads close or divert on event days, so check a maps app. There is on-site parking at Melrose Central.
By ferry, train and bus
The ferry is the one public transport link that crosses the river here. Sydney Olympic Park Wharf is at the end of Hill Road, around a 40 minute walk (3.6 kilometres) from the stadium precinct according to Transport for NSW. Meadowbank is the next F3 stop towards Circular Quay, and from Meadowbank Wharf it is a short taxi or a longer walk west to Melrose Central. Transport for NSW lists the 525 bus between Parramatta and Lidcombe via Newington, the 526 via the precinct and wharf, and the 533 to Chatswood via Rhodes; none passes through Melrose Park, so a bus trip usually means the 525 to Parramatta and the Victoria Road bus from there. Routes change, so check the trip planner. The second stage of the Parramatta Light Rail is planned to run through Melrose Park to Sydney Olympic Park but is not open.
| Where you live | Usual way to Lumi Dental | Allow about |
|---|---|---|
| Newington, Marketplace and Holker Street | Car via Silverwater Road, Silverwater Bridge, Victoria Road and Wharf Road | About 10 to 15 minutes by car outside peak |
| Olympic Park town centre and station | Car via Australia Avenue, Homebush Bay Drive, Ryde Bridge and Victoria Road | About 10 to 15 minutes by car outside peak |
| Hill Road, towards the wharf | F3 ferry one stop to Meadowbank, then a short taxi; or car via Ryde Bridge | Ferry timetable plus a few minutes by taxi |
These are planning estimates outside peak, not timetable facts.

What a first visit involves
healthdirect describes a dental check-up as a mouth examination and teeth cleaning by a dental practitioner, and says a check-up every 6 to 12 months can help prevent problems before they become painful, costly or difficult to treat. At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, the hygiene team looks after the clean, and X-rays and scans are taken in house when needed. You leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. Just over a quarter of Sydney Olympic Park residents were born in Australia, according to Wikipedia, so many households here are choosing a dentist in Australia for the first time: bring a list of your medicines, your Medicare card and any health fund card. If you are nervous, say so when you book; it changes how I pace the first appointment.
Weekend sport, the precinct and your teeth
A great deal of Sydney's weekend sport happens in the precinct, and two things follow for teeth. The first is a mouthguard for anyone playing a contact or ball sport: Lumi Dental makes custom sports mouthguards, and our comparison of custom versus boil-and-bite mouthguards explains the difference. The second is knowing what to do if a tooth is knocked out, because the first minutes matter; read our knocked-out tooth first aid guide before the season starts.

Children and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
Families here are often eligible for the CDBS without realising it. Services Australia sets three conditions: the child is eligible for Medicare, is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, and the child or a parent, carer or guardian receives an eligible payment at least once that year. There is no application; Services Australia sends a letter when a child qualifies. The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the CDBS, and healthdirect suggests check-ups from 12 months of age or when the first teeth appear.
Emergencies, Saturdays and fitting a visit around work
A cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth or a swelling does not wait for a convenient day. Lumi Dental keeps time in the day for emergency appointments, so ring first and describe the problem. With more than 5,000 events a year in the precinct, I usually suggest checking the event calendar before you set out. The practice is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page.

Questions patients ask
How far is Melrose Park from Sydney Olympic Park?
Directly across the Parramatta River, with no road bridge in between, so the drive goes round by the Silverwater Bridge or the Ryde Bridge. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes outside peak, more on event days.
Can I take the ferry from Sydney Olympic Park to a dentist in Melrose Park?
Yes. The F3 leaves Sydney Olympic Park Wharf at the end of Hill Road, and Meadowbank, the next stop towards Circular Quay, is a short taxi from Melrose Central. Check the timetable, because ferries fill on event days.
Is there a dentist near Newington that sees emergencies?
Lumi Dental keeps time each day for emergencies and is a short drive over the Silverwater Bridge. Ring first and describe what has happened; the team will tell you what to do on the phone.
Can my child use the CDBS at Lumi Dental?
Yes, for eligible children. Eligibility depends on Medicare status and family payments, which Services Australia confirms by letter; bring the child's Medicare card and ask the team to check the balance first.
