If you live in Westmead or Northmead and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a drive east through Parramatta and along Victoria Road, or a light rail and bus trip, with on-site parking when you arrive. Both suburbs sit about 26 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD, according to Wikipedia, and Westmead is a major health precinct with large public hospitals and a public dental centre. This guide covers public dental eligibility, the trip to Melrose Park, and what a first visit, the CDBS and emergencies look like at a private practice.
Written by Dr James Tran, BDent (University of Sydney), MICOI, GradDip (Oral Implants), general dentist at Lumi Dental in Melrose Park.
The short version
- Westmead (postcode 2145, about 16,600 residents) spans the City of Parramatta and Cumberland Council; Northmead (postcode 2152, about 11,300 residents) is in the City of Parramatta, according to Wikipedia.
- Children under 18 and adults with an eligible concession card can use NSW public dental services, including the Westmead Centre for Oral Health; waiting times vary with demand.
- By car, both suburbs reach Melrose Park through Parramatta and east along Victoria Road, with on-site parking at Melrose Central.
- Without a car, the L4 light rail runs from Westmead through Parramatta to Yallamundi in Rydalmere, where bus route 524 continues to Cobham Avenue, Melrose Park.
- Our guide on how to choose a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park sets out what to compare between practices.
- The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children, and keeps time for emergency appointments.
The single rule: check eligibility first, then choose the trip you can repeat
If you hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or you are booking for a child, start by checking whether public dental care suits you. If it does not, or you would like to choose your own appointment times, then pick a private dentist whose trip still works at the fourth visit, not just the first. In my experience the dentist who helps most is the one you keep seeing.
Where the suburbs sit
Westmead and Northmead share a history. Wikipedia records that both were once part of the domain of Government House at Parramatta, and that when the domain was subdivided in the nineteenth century, the Western Meadow became Westmead and the Northern Meadow became Northmead. What is left of the domain is now Parramatta Park, on Westmead's eastern edge.
In Westmead, health is the major employer, with Westmead Hospital, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and several medical research institutes in the precinct. The most recent census counted 16,555 residents, with a median age of 33.
Northmead is a hilly suburb north of Westmead, where Darling Mills Creek and Toongabbie Creek meet to form the beginnings of the Parramatta River. It has no railway station; the North-West T-way bus corridor runs through it towards Parramatta. The most recent census counted 11,261 residents.

Public dental care at Westmead and how private care fits
Western Sydney Local Health District describes the Westmead Centre for Oral Health as one of Australia's largest dental centres, offering general and specialist care. NSW Health explains that public dental services are provided to children and eligible adults, and that eligible patients are not charged a co-payment for general dental services, although charges may apply for some specialist services.
Who is eligible
- All children under 18 who live in NSW.
- Adults who are eligible for Medicare and hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
- Specialist care needs a referral from a dentist or doctor, and may have extra requirements.
Western Sydney Local Health District notes that waiting times for specialist care vary with demand, and NSW Health says public services prioritise emergencies and people most in need. Our articles on public dental eligibility and the waiting list in NSW and what public dental will not treat go through the detail.
The Children's Hospital at Westmead also has a dental service for eligible children, such as those with medical conditions or facial anomalies; it needs a referral from a GP, paediatrician or specialist.
Public and private care are not in competition. Some patients I see use both, and the choice rests on eligibility, timing and the treatment you need.
Getting to Melrose Central
By car
From Westmead, head east into Parramatta and join Victoria Road, which runs through Rydalmere and Ermington to Wharf Road and into Melrose Park. From Northmead, come south towards Parramatta along Windsor Road or Church Street and pick up Victoria Road the same way. Outside peak the drive often takes around 15 to 25 minutes; allow more at school and commuter times.
By light rail and bus from Westmead
The NSW Government describes Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 as a 12-kilometre line with 16 stops between Westmead and Carlingford, starting at the Westmead, Westmead Hospital and Children's Hospital stops. Ride east to Yallamundi in Rydalmere, where the Transport for NSW timetable for route 524, Parramatta to West Ryde, lists a stop. The bus continues through Ermington to Cobham Avenue opposite Parer Street, Melrose Park, on weekdays and weekends.
From Northmead, buses along the North-West T-way run into Parramatta, where route 524 also starts at Parramatta Station. Check the trip planner for the stop closest to Melrose Central.

What a first visit involves
At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, the hygiene team of oral health therapists looks after the clean, and X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed. You leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. Bring your Medicare and health fund cards, a list of your medicines, and any letters or X-rays from a previous dentist or public clinic.
Children and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
Wikipedia notes that children under 15 made up about a fifth of Westmead's residents at the most recent census. The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children; read more on the CDBS page and in our article on the Child Dental Benefits Schedule explained. Where a child needs general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.

Emergencies, shift work and busy weeks
Western Sydney Local Health District advises seeking urgent dental care for facial or mouth swelling, bleeding that will not stop, dental trauma, or difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing, and calling Triple Zero (000) or going to the nearest emergency department if symptoms worsen. For a broken tooth or toothache, ring Lumi Dental first; the practice keeps time for emergency appointments.
The practice is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page. For shift workers in the health precinct, I usually suggest booking the next visit around your roster before you leave.
