If you live or work in Rosehill or Camellia and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a short drive across the Parramatta River: James Ruse Drive over the bridge, then Victoria Road east to Wharf Road, with on-site parking when you arrive. Both suburbs sit in the City of Parramatta, 17 to 18 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD according to Wikipedia, and Melrose Park lies further east on the northern bank of the river. A search for a dentist near Rosehill or Camellia mostly returns directory listings, so this guide covers the routes, the first visit, children and the CDBS, Saturdays and emergencies.

Written by Dr James Tran, BDent (University of Sydney), MICOI, GradDip (Oral Implants), general dentist at Lumi Dental in Melrose Park.

The short version

  • Rosehill (around 4,000 residents, postcode 2142) and Camellia (industrial, no resident population at the most recent census) are neighbours in the City of Parramatta, according to Wikipedia. Melrose Park is on the far bank of the river.
  • By car, James Ruse Drive crosses the river and meets Victoria Road, which runs east to Wharf Road and Melrose Park. A short drive outside peak, with on-site parking at Melrose Central.
  • The light rail stop for both suburbs is Rosehill Gardens, on the site of the former Camellia railway station. No stop is in Melrose Park (the second stage through Camellia and Melrose Park is planned, not open), so a public transport trip is light rail into Parramatta, then bus route 524 towards West Ryde.
  • A first visit is an examination by a dentist, X-rays where needed, a clean and a written quote; our guide to choosing a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park sets out what to compare.
  • Eligible children can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and the practice keeps time for emergencies and opens on Saturdays.

The single rule: choose the dentist whose trip still works at the fourth visit

The first appointment is the easy one. In my experience the dentist who helps most is the one you keep seeing, and from Rosehill or Camellia that comes down to a route that avoids the Parramatta CBD at peak, crosses the river once and ends in a car park. If you work in Camellia, a visit before or after a shift may suit better than a Saturday.

Where the suburbs sit

Rosehill is the residential one. Wikipedia describes it as a mix of residential, commercial, industrial and recreational land, with Parramatta, Camellia and Rydalmere to its north and Harris Park, Granville and Clyde around its western and southern edges. Most people know it for Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, home of the Golden Slipper, and for Elizabeth Farm on Alice Street. The most recent census counted 4,047 residents with a median age of 32, well under the national figure of 38; just under a third were born in Australia and almost as many in India, and about two-thirds of homes were rented. It is a young, mobile suburb, and many households here are choosing a dentist in Australia for the first time.

Camellia is different. Wikipedia describes it as primarily industrial with no residential population, bounded by the Parramatta River to the north, with Grand Avenue running east to west and James Ruse Drive north to south, and earmarked as a future centre for high-density living. For now, the people who ask me about a dentist near Camellia almost all work there.

Melrose Park sits on the northern bank of the river, split between the City of Ryde and the City of Parramatta, according to Wikipedia, and Lumi Dental is at Melrose Central there. Our companion guides to a dentist near Ermington and Rydalmere and a dentist near Oatlands and North Parramatta cover the suburbs on the way.

Getting to Melrose Central

By car

James Ruse Drive is the spine of the trip. Wikipedia's route description has it leaving Parramatta Road at Clyde, passing the Grand Avenue turn for Camellia and the racecourse (and Hassall Street for Harris Park), crossing the river on the James Ruse Drive Bridge and then meeting Victoria Road at an interchange. Take Victoria Road east: it passes under Silverwater Road at the Rydalmere to Ermington boundary and reaches Wharf Road, which turns south into Melrose Park and on to Melrose Central. It is a short drive outside peak, but Wikipedia names Victoria Road among the most congested roads in Sydney, so allow extra time at school and commuter times.

By light rail and bus

The Parramatta Light Rail connects Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, with 16 stops over 12 kilometres, according to the NSW Government. The stop for Rosehill and Camellia is Rosehill Gardens, which Wikipedia notes sits on the site of the former Camellia railway station; there is no stop called Camellia, and none of the 16 stops is in Melrose Park. The second stage, planned to link the Parramatta CBD to Camellia, Ermington, Melrose Park, Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic Park with 14 stops over 10 kilometres, is not open, so the bus does the last leg: Transport for NSW lists route 524 as Parramatta to West Ryde, and it serves Melrose Park.

What a first visit involves

At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, the hygiene team of oral health therapists looks after the clean, and X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed. You leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. Wikipedia records that almost 80 per cent of Rosehill residents had both parents born overseas, so I often meet patients whose last dental records are in another country; it helps to know what was done. If you are nervous, say so when you book, because it changes how I pace the visit.

What to bring:

  • Your Medicare card and any health fund card.
  • A list of your medicines.
  • The name of your previous dentist, or recent X-rays.

Children and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Children under 15 make up about a fifth of Rosehill's population, according to Wikipedia, so family bookings are common from this side of the river. The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children; our explainer on the Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers who qualifies and what it pays for. Where a child needs general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.

Emergencies, Saturdays and shift work

A cracked tooth or a swelling does not wait for a convenient day. Lumi Dental keeps time in the day for emergency appointments, so ring first and describe the problem. The practice is open Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment; check current hours on the contact page. For patients who work shifts in Camellia, I usually suggest the first or last appointment of the day, which sits either side of most rosters and misses the worst of Victoria Road.
