If you live in Harris Park or Granville and are looking for a dentist, Lumi Dental at Melrose Central in Melrose Park is a drive up James Ruse Drive and east along Victoria Road, or a train and bus trip through Parramatta, with on-site parking when you arrive. Harris Park sits 19 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD and Granville 18 kilometres, according to Wikipedia, both close to the Parramatta CBD. This guide covers public dental eligibility, the routes to Melrose Park, a first check-up, the CDBS for children and what to do in an emergency.
Written by Dr James Tran, BDent (University of Sydney), MICOI, GradDip (Oral Implants), general dentist at Lumi Dental in Melrose Park.
The short version
- Harris Park (postcode 2150, about 5,000 residents) is in the City of Parramatta; Granville (postcode 2142, about 16,700 residents) is split between Cumberland City Council and the City of Parramatta, according to Wikipedia.
- Children under 18 who live in NSW, and adults with Medicare and an eligible concession card, can use public dental services such as the Westmead Centre for Oral Health; waiting times vary with demand.
- By car, James Ruse Drive links Hassall Street in Harris Park and Parramatta Road near Granville to Victoria Road, which runs east towards Melrose Park.
- Without a car, take the train to Parramatta and bus route 524 towards West Ryde, which stops on Cobham Avenue in Melrose Park.
- Our neighbouring guide to a dentist near Rosehill and Camellia covers the suburbs just east of Harris Park.
- The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children, and keeps time for emergency appointments.
The single rule: settle eligibility first, then pick a trip you will repeat
If you hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or you are booking for a child, start by checking whether the public dental service suits your needs and your timing. If it does not, choose a private dentist whose trip still works on a wet weekday at the third or fourth visit. In my experience the trip matters more than people expect.
Where the suburbs sit
Harris Park
Wikipedia records that James Ruse developed Experiment Farm here, which sowed the first wheat in Australia, and that the suburb is named after surgeon John Harris, who later bought the farm. Experiment Farm Cottage on Ruse Street is heritage-listed and open to the public. Today there is a small shopping area around Marion Street, part of which is known as Little India. The most recent census counted 5,043 residents. Harris Park station has T1, T2 and T5 services, and Parramatta is the next station west.
Granville
Granville began as Parramatta Junction, the end of the first railway line in New South Wales, according to Wikipedia. Its station is the junction for the Main Western and Main South lines, with T1 and T2 services and a bus interchange beside it. The most recent census counted 16,716 residents, and more than two-thirds were born overseas, so many households are setting up with a dentist in Australia for the first time.

Public dental care and how private care fits
Western Sydney Local Health District provides public dental care for eligible residents in Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Holroyd and Parramatta, and describes the Westmead Centre for Oral Health as one of Australia's largest dental centres, offering general and specialist care.
Who is eligible
- All children under 18 who live in NSW.
- Adults who are eligible for Medicare and hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
- Some specialist or hospital-based dental care has extra requirements and needs a referral from a dentist or doctor.
The district notes that waiting times vary with demand, that some services are free while others may have a cost explained first, and that an interpreter can be arranged if you ask.
Public and private care are not rivals. Some patients use both, and the choice rests on eligibility, timing and the treatment needed. Our guide on how to choose a dentist near Parramatta, Ryde and Melrose Park sets out what to compare between private practices.
Getting to Melrose Central
By car
Wikipedia's route description has James Ruse Drive starting at Parramatta Road in Clyde, on Granville's eastern side, passing the Hassall Street turn for Harris Park, crossing the Parramatta River and meeting Victoria Road. From there, head east on Victoria Road through Rydalmere and Ermington towards Melrose Park. The route skirts the Parramatta CBD, and parking is on site at Melrose Central.
By train and bus
From Harris Park or Granville, ride a train to Parramatta. The Transport for NSW timetable for route 524, Parramatta to West Ryde, runs from Parramatta Station through the Yallamundi light rail stop in Rydalmere and Ermington to Cobham Avenue opposite Parer Street, Melrose Park, every day of the week. On the current timetable that bus leg takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes. If you live near the Robin Thomas light rail stop, you can also ride the Parramatta Light Rail east to Yallamundi and join the same bus there.

What a first check-up involves
At Lumi Dental a dentist does the examination and diagnosis, and the hygiene team of oral health therapists looks after the clean. X-rays and 3D scans are taken in house when needed, and you leave with a written quote before any treatment starts. Our article on a scale and clean and what to expect walks through that part of the visit.
Bring your Medicare and health fund cards, a list of your medicines, and any records or X-rays from a previous dentist, wherever that was. If you would like a family member to come in with you to help with English, mention it when you book so the appointment is not rushed.

Children and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
The whole practice at Lumi Dental accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children; read more on the CDBS page. For a child's first visit, our children's first dental visit guide explains how to prepare. Where a child needs general anaesthetic, the team refers to a paediatric dentist or hospital service.
